Standard Exam Scoring & Mistake Categorization

Most government bodies categorize typographical errors into two distinct types when computing net qualifying speed:

Full Mistakes (100% Penalty)

  • Omission of any complete word or figure from the master passage.
  • Substitution of a wrong word or number in place of the original text.
  • Addition of an extra or irrelevant word not present in the master text.

Half Mistakes (50% Penalty)

  • Spelling errors, transposition of letters, or repeated letters in a word.
  • Wrong capitalization (e.g. typing lowercase letter when uppercase is required).
  • Incorrect punctuation or spacing within a word.
Exam FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions on Exam Typing

Is Backspace allowed during government typing exams?

Rules vary by examination. In tests like SSC CGL and CHSL DEST, the Backspace key is generally permitted to edit words within the active session. However, some state exams disable or penalize backspacing. AksharType lets you toggle backspace restrictions in test settings.

Which layout should I choose for Hindi typing exams: InScript or Remington?

InScript is the standardized Indian government layout recommended for modern Unicode typing. Remington Gail (typewriter-style mapping) is widely used in CPCT, Allahabad High Court, and state commission exams. Both layouts are supported on AksharType.

How can I practice offline or on a mechanical keyboard?

You can connect any USB or mechanical keyboard to your laptop or PC and practice on AksharType directly in full-screen mode (F11) to simulate examination desktop conditions.
